I was jealous. I was a junior writer and had a couple scripts that were liked internally. My boss took them, patted me on the head, and into the client meeting he went. Without me.
Jealousy lead to determination to do everything I could to spend as much of my career on the right side of that door. Because the room is where it happens. Where the fate of ideas is decided. Where courses of business are set.
To this day that is my ambition. To be the guy the teams want in the room when they might be on to something. The guy the planner wants in the room to help find a new way to skin the cat. The guy the CEO wants in the room for the final pitch. The guy the clients want in the room when they’re stumped.
